And we're off!

My dad and I leave at the crack of dawn tomorrow morning for a trip to South Africa. My dad was an exchange student in the late 60’s and has remained very close with his host family over the last 50+ years so it really feels like we’re going to visit family

It feels like an absolute dream to be able to accompany him on a trip like this. I know that my mom and sisters would love to come too, but the way it worked out, it’s just my dad and I.

And boy do I know what to expect when it comes to traveling with my dad. We will get to every airport so many hours early it will seem bonkers. He will make sure I’ve truly only packed a carry-on for 15 days of travel and I will need to ensure extra granola bars are on hand for him when he gets a bit hangry.

But, I’m also more excited for all of the unexpected things that await us as we travel together. The adventures that will unfold. The memories that we will create together. And more importantly, the more I’m going to get to know him. Returning to a place AND a family that is so dear to him will only allow him to remember parts of his life shared in that country. And I get to be there as he shares it with me. Pretty priceless.

I hope that you also get to find opportunities to know each other more.

Whether it’s your parents, your kids, or your partner. There is so much we don’t know about each other and finding any opportunity to get to know them a bit more is pretty remarkable.

Here’s to embracing life’s adventures and getting to know each other better along the way!

Until next week,

-A

P.S. If the two of you feel a bit too much like strangers, I encourage you to follow the link to the Communication Masterclass and let the neutrality of learning together help you reset your communication and find your way back. I’m cheering you on!
